The heightened functionality, convenience and easy availability of portable storage devices have made them some of the most sought after hardware components in the present times. Owing to the extensive usage of mobiles phones and tablets, a demand for portable storage methods has increased. A secure digital memory card is the answer to this as it is not only small, but can hold in gigabytes of data as well.
Memory cards are sold in 3 forms: SD, mini SD and micro SD. Currently micro SD is largely used in mobile phones because it is very small and offers high transfer speed. The other advantage of these memory cards is that they consume very less energy to operate, thus making them the ideal choice for mobile devices.
Memory cards are classified as SD, SDHC and SDXC based on data holding capacity. SD is the basic version and not much in use currently. SDHC stands for Secure Digital High Capacity which can hold data up to 32 GB. SDXC stands for Secure Digital Extended Capacity which can theoretically hold data up to 1 TB. Other features of memory cards are write protection and password lock.
