So a nuclear reaction is when the uranium inside the reactor heats up to over 5000 degress and then explodes in the reactor causing the outer shell to crack open and release radioactive gasses into the air, I know that. So going by that definition (correct me if im wrong). What where the explosions in Japan about if they say that that are still trying to stop a meltdown. If there hasn't been a meltdown whats up with the 3 explosions so far?

The explosions were due to the uranium rods getting too hot and producing hydrogen. The hydrogen exploded, as hydrogen is very unstable. But the uranium didn't get hot enough to explode.
